I graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Film (though part way through my time there, they changed the name of it to “Media Arts”). I crewed up on every show that got made at our school the last year I was there, and well into the next one after I graduated. Digital cameras that recorded to tape were just becoming available when I left school, so I got started shooting 16mm and cutting with a film splicer (essentially a pair of scissors and a roll of tape).

Nowadays, I shoot on my own Sony FS700 with a Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q+ attached to it. This gives me the ability to capture beautiful 4K, 2K, and HD footage in either RAW or ProRes formats, while approaching 15 stops of dynamic range. Equipment Packages

Here is a list of the different sets of equipment I can bring with me on any given shoot. If you just need something more precise and want to work out a less expensive arrangement, I can work with you.
  • Sony FS700 with Odyssey 7Q+

    This is my basic package: just a camera with a recorder/monitor. But don't be fooled, the Sony FS700 paired with the Odyssey 7Q+ give you a wide breadth of capabilities:

    • 4K RAW or ProRes up to 60fps (120fps in burst mode)
    • 2K or HD RAW or ProRes up to 240fps
    • Up to 15 stops of dynamic range

    This rig comes with several accessories to make a day of shooting more convenient:

  • Sony A7 III with DJI Ronin-S

    This camera package allows me to be far more mobile than I can with the FS700/Odyssey 7Q+. The A7 III can shoot at frame rates up to 30fps in 4K and 120fps in HD. With the Ronin-S, I can shoot incredibly smooth tracking shots. The rig includes the following accessories:

    Any mobile device with the PlayMemories App from Sony installed on it can be used as a monitor for the A7 III, which acts as its own Wi-Fi hub. You can see my Samsung Galaxy S8 attached to the Ronin-S in the pictures.

  • LED/Fresnel & Kino Lighting Kit and Grip Package

    I have 10 LED fresnels of various sizes and 4 small LED panels. They are all 5600K daylight balanced, so I have CTO gels to adjust them when I need them to match tungsten lights. They have some wonderful advantages over tungsten lights: they all run cool, they are all dimmable, and none of them draws requires more than 200 watts at full output. That means that I can plug the entire kit into one basic 15 amp circuit without fear of throwing the breaker. Despite the low power consumption, they still kick out as much light as tungsten fixtures that require five to ten times more power. Here's a list of them with specifics:

    I also have a load of Kino Flo fluorescent fixtures with daylight tubes in them:

    There are also some expendables, like gels and gaff tape. What you would expect. There are also two carts: a RockNRolla R10RT and R16RT for moving it all.

    I have gotten away from using them, but I also have quite a few tungsten lights in my kit. They're just so hot and take so much power that I now generally don't even travel with them. Nevertheless, here is a listing:

    If it's not clear, I can only run 3 soft boxes at a time because I only have three heads. They make pretty light, but they're hot and two of them running 1000w globes will blow a 15 amp household circuit. Lately I prefer just to shoot LED fresnels through a silk.

  • Camera Support/Movement

    Apart from my Benro H10 100mm ball head and Davis & Sanford ProVista 100 tripod, I have the following camera support/movement options:

    EZ Jib

    • 100mm Bowl
    • 4ft arm, permits 7ft vertical camera move
    • Can be rigged overslung, underslung, or with camera pointed straight down
    • Includes EZ FX Handle for manual pan and tilt

    Skateboard Dolly

    This doesn't provide the smoothest ride, as it's just a set of wheels that mounts right onto your spike-footed tripod. Nevertheless, it's rather nice when on a sound stage or at a location with a smooth, flat floor to have your jib sitting on top of it when it's time to move to the next setup.

    I have a fairly simple kit for recording sound:
